(S)-4-(1-Hydroxyethyl)pyridine is a chiral compound that can be synthesized in an enantioselective manner. It is used in the study of protein concentrations and enzyme specificity as well as in the production of active substances. Nakamura first reported the synthesis of (S)-4-(1-hydroxyethyl)pyridine from methyl ketones and acetyl chloride, which was followed by oxidation with bovine serum albumin to produce a chiral product. The reaction can be accomplished using dehydrogenase or other enzymes that are specific for acetylation.
