Trans-4-hydroxy-l-proline beta-naphthylamide is an amide that is produced by the condensation of two molecules of trans-4-hydroxyproline and one molecule of 2-naphthylamine. This compound has been used as a chromogenic substrate in the detection of lysosomal enzymes and carboxypeptidases. The carboxy group on this amide reacts with the amino group on lysosomal enzymes, resulting in a change in color. Trans-4-hydroxyproline beta naphthylamide also has properties that are similar to those found in natural food coloring agents, such as carboxylic acid, amino, and aromatic groups.
