Heptafluorobutyryl chloride is an acyl halide that has a phase transition temperature of -30°C. It can be used as a diagnostic agent for the detection of water vapor in the atmosphere by magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It reacts with epoxides to form perfluorinated products and fatty acids, which are volatile and have a high boiling point. Heptafluorobutyryl chloride also reacts with trifluoroacetic acid to form perflouroacetic acid and hydrogen bonds with fatty acids, making it suitable for use in food markets.
