4'-Hydroxy-7-methoxyflavanone (4HMF) is a naturally occurring flavanone that has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells. It is also active against human tumour xenografts in nude mice and has been shown to reduce the growth of human colon cancer cells in vitro. 4HMF inhibits the enzyme dehydrogenase, which is involved in the conversion of pimelic acid to pimeloyl-CoA. This inhibition leads to a decrease in pim-1 kinase activity, which suppresses tumour cell proliferation. 4HMF also inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species and promotes apoptosis by activating caspases. The anticarcinogenic properties of 4HMF are due to its ability to inhibit cellular proliferation, induce apoptosis, inhibit angiogenesis and metastasis, as well as its antioxidant properties.
