8-Hydroxygenistein is a natural flavonoid that has been found to have a variety of physiological activities, including antihypertensive activity. 8-Hydroxygenistein is an inhibitor of the enzyme nadph-cytochrome P450 reductase, which catalyzes the conversion of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADPH) to NADP. 8-Hydroxygenistein has also been found to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that break down collagen and help regulate the turnover rate of other proteins in tissues. It also has been shown to inhibit melanogenesis and biochanin synthesis in rat liver microsomes. The effects of 8-hydroxygenistein on cancer cells have been studied extensively, with mixed results. In some cases it has shown anticancer activity while other studies have found no effect or even increased cancer cell proliferation.
