5-Hydroxy-3',3,4',5',7-pentamethoxyflavone is a diterpene that has been found to have an inhibitory effect on Leishmania. It has also been shown to have a dose-dependent effect on polymorphic strains of the genus. This compound has been shown to have an inhibiting effect on chloride ion channels in plant tissue and may be useful in treating leishmaniasis. 5-Hydroxy-3',3,4',5',7-pentamethoxyflavone is found in plants of the family Simaroubaceae and Rutaceae and can be extracted from both plant tissues and ethanol extracts. The presence of methoxy groups on the molecule may be important for its inhibitory effects against Leishmania.
