It has been found to reduce kidney fibrosis by inhibiting the production of collagen and other proteins in the body. Puerarin also inhibits the production of growth factors, which are proteins that signal cell growth and proliferation. Puerarin can be extracted from the roots of pueraria lobata or it can be synthesized in a lab. The chemical structure of puertarin is 3'-hydroxy-3',4'-dihydroxypuetaric acid. Puerarin is an aromatic compound that is soluble in water and hydrochloric acid but not in organic solvents such as ether, chloroform, or hexane. This compound has UV absorption peaks at 225 nm and 270 nm. In order to extract puertarin from the plant, it must first be extracted with hot water then filtered with filter paper then dried and finally dissolved in hydrochloric acid
