Huperzine B is a natural alkaloid that has been found to have a number of pharmacological effects. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of some enzymes such as phospholipases, cyclooxygenases, and lipoxygenases. Huperzine B also inhibits inflammatory reactions by inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines from macrophages and neutrophils. The compound binds to dna duplexes and prevents the DNA from separating. This inhibition causes an increase in intracellular Ca2+ levels, which can lead to cell death by apoptosis or necrosis. Huperzine B is also able to bind iron ions and maintain the homeostasis of this essential metal ion in cells. In addition, huperzine B can decrease bowel disease by reducing inflammation and preventing bacteria from adhering to the intestinal lining.
