Hexafluoroethane is a gaseous, non-toxic, colorless compound with a boiling point of -10.4 degrees Celsius. It has been used in the production of polymers and refrigerants. Hexafluoroethane is also used as a high-temperature gas because it is inert and does not react with other compounds at temperatures above its boiling point. Hexafluoroethane has a strong infrared absorption band that can be used as an analytical tool to identify other molecules by their vibrational frequencies. In addition, hexafluoroethane can be used as an anion exchange column for use in chromatography to separate anions from cations.
Hexafluoroethane is not very soluble in water, but it will dissolve in polar solvents such as acetone or chloroform. The molecule has a dihedral angle of 109°
