Isonipecotic acid HCl is a deuterated analog of the natural compound, nicotinic acid. It is a hybridization probe used to study the interactions between DNA and RNA molecules. Isonipecotic acid HCl binds to double-stranded DNA or single-stranded RNA by hydrogen bonding. When it binds to DNA, it interacts with group P2 in the phosphate backbone and may also form a hydrogen bond with the hydroxyl group of one of the ribose residues. Isonipecotic acid HCl has been shown to bind to RNA as well and form hydrogen bonds with both the 3' hydroxyl group of an adenosine residue and an adjacent phosphate oxygen atom.
