3-Iodo-L-tyrosine is an analog of tyrosine, which has been shown to bind to the thyroid hormone receptor sites. 3-Iodo-L-tyrosine can be used for the diagnosis of thyroid conditions, such as thyroid neoplasms, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. The optimum concentration for 3-iodo-l-tyrosine is between 0.05 and 10 micromolar. 3-Iodo-L-tyrosine can be detected in human serum by a chemical biology method that uses a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and mass spectroscopy. The principle behind this technique is that 3-iodo-L-tyrosine will bind to monoisotopic tyrosine residues on DNA or RNA molecules, which can be identified using a mass spectrometer. This technique is also able to measure the concentrations of monoiodotyrosine in a sample.
