2-Iodoxybenzoic acid is an oxidizing agent that is used in photochemical reactions. It has been used to prepare aldehydes from amines and has been shown to have photocatalytic activity. 2-Iodoxybenzoic acid can be synthesized by dehydrogenation of the corresponding 2-iodoaniline with hydrochloric acid. The mechanism of this process is not well understood, but it may involve a free radical mechanism. Mechanistic studies indicate that 2-iodobenzoic acid may be a useful dehydrogenation agent or an oxidant in organic synthesis because it does not form hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct.
