2-Isopropoxyphenyl methylcarbamate is a carbamate insecticide that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. It is used in agriculture for the control of insects and mites and in public health to control ticks, mosquitoes, and lice. 2-Isopropoxyphenyl methylcarbamate has been shown to have a toxic effect on mitochondria, leading to mitochondrial membrane potential loss, decreased ATP production, and cell death. This drug also affects DNA replication by preventing DNA polymerase from synthesizing new strands of DNA. 2-Isopropoxyphenyl methylcarbamate is metabolized in humans by carboxylesterases, which are found in liver cells as well as other tissues. The drug is excreted mainly through urine and can be detected in human serum up to one week after exposure.
