2-Iodo-5-methylbenzoic acid is a fine chemical, useful building block and reagent that is used in the synthesis of complex compounds. It is versatile because it can be used as a reactant, intermediate or scaffold in many chemical reactions. It has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the Suzuki reaction and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reaction. 2-Iodo-5-methylbenzoic acid has also been found to be a useful intermediate for the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals, such as tamoxifen, griseofulvin, mesalazine, and risperidone.
