2-Isobutylthiophene is a pyridine derivative that has been shown to have neuroprotective and antioxidant properties. 2-Isobutylthiophene was extracted from the bark of the tree with the same name. It has also been found to be a potent inhibitor of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and possesses anti-inflammatory activity. In addition, 2-isobutylthiophene is thought to be a nootropic agent and may protect neurons in the brain by inhibiting the production of amyloid beta peptide. 2-Isobutylthiophene has been shown to inhibit parkinsonian symptoms induced by MPTP in mice.
