Apium is a secondary metabolite that is produced by plants in response to environmental stress, such as drought. Apium is a conjugate of 1-indanone-4-carboxylic acid and amino acids. It has been shown to interact with the plant's elicitor signal transducer, which leads to changes in gene expression and the biosynthesis of endogenous compounds. Apium has also been shown to be involved in the synthesis of benzophenanthridine alkaloids, which are alkanoic acid derivatives with a variety of biological activities.
