2-Isobutyl-4-methylpyridine is a volatile organic compound that is used as a reagent in the production of acetone. It has been shown to be present in wastewater, and can be quantified by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). 2-Isobutyl-4-methylpyridine has been shown to react with sulfide to produce hydrogen sulfide and other volatile compounds. The reaction time for this process depends on the concentration of the reactants. This compound also reacts with aldehydes and alcohols to form acetals or hemiacetals, which are more stable than their corresponding carbonyl compounds. The atomicity of 2-isobutyl-4-methylpyridine was determined experimentally at 0.487 amu/g.
