Illudin M is a cyclic peptide that is isolated from the mushroom Omphalotus olearius. It has been shown to have antitumor activity in vivo and in vitro. Illudin M inhibits the growth of tumor cells by binding to their surface receptors, which blocks the activation of cell signaling pathways that control cell proliferation. Illudin M also induces apoptosis through caspase-3 activation and cytochrome c release. The structure of Illudin M resembles lysine residues found in proteins, and has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in animal cells.
