Iron(III) perchlorate can be used as a catalyst for the synthesis of trifluoroacetic acid from methanol. This compound also has thermal expansion properties, which make it useful in the calibration of pressure gauges. Iron(III) perchlorate reacts with zirconium oxide to produce alkanoic acids, fatty acids, and perchloric acid. This reaction is catalyzed by potassium dichromate and transfer reactions are involved in the formation of this compound.
