17-Iodo-3-O-methyl estratetraenol is an n-substituted regioselective formylation of steroids with hydrazine. The yield of the hydrazine can be increased by carbonylation of the hydrazide. Hydroxamic acid derivatives are synthesized from this reaction, which have been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. 17-Iodo-3-O-methyl estratetraenol is a nucleophilic reagent, which means that it will react with electrophiles as well as nucleophiles to form covalent bonds.
