Indole-3-propanol is an inhibitor of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which catalyzes the reduction of dihydrofolic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid. This conversion is essential for DNA synthesis and repair in bacteria. Indole-3-propanol inhibits this reaction reversibly by binding to the hydroxy group in the active site of the enzyme, thereby blocking access to substrate analogues such as phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP).
