3-Iodothiophene is a functional group that contains an electron-withdrawing terminal alkyne. This compound reacts with copper to form the corresponding copper(I) 3-iodothiophene complex, which has been shown to react with malonic acid to form methyl ketones. The interaction constant between 3-iodothiophene and copper is 2.0 x 10^6 M^(-1). 3-Iodothiophene reacts with a variety of other compounds including magnesium, c1-4 alkyl, and Grignard reagents. Palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions have been performed using this compound as a starting material.
