2-Isopropoxyethanol is a water-soluble organic solvent that has been used in analytical chemistry for the separation of polar compounds. It is also used as a dehydrating agent and viscosity enhancer, and may be found in cosmetics or pharmaceuticals. 2-Isopropoxyethanol is chemically classified as an alcohol with two hydroxyl groups, but unlike most other alcohols, it does not contain a hydrogen bond between the two hydroxyl groups. This lack of hydrogen bonding leads to its low solubility in water, which can be increased by adding n-dimethyl formamide. The hemolytic activity of 2-isopropoxyethanol has been shown to be related to the concentration of potassium ions and the pH of the solution.
