DL-Isomenthol is an organic compound with the formula (CH3)2CHOH. It is a structural isomer of menthol, differing by the position of one hydroxyl group. DL-Isomenthol can be synthesized in a two-step process. The first step involves the reaction of carbon disulfide with hydroxyl compounds under low temperature and pressure to form 2,6-dimethylcyclohexanol, which reacts with sodium methoxide to produce DL-isomenthol. DL-Isomenthol has antiviral activity against influenza A and B viruses. It also has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that are thought to be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis via inhibition of cyclooxygenase activity.
