Isocupressic acid is an extract of the bark of the genus Cupressus. Isocupressic acid has been shown to act as a potent inducer of cancer cell apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that are mediated by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. Isocupressic acid was found to have no effects on systolic or diastolic blood pressure in rats, although it did show toxicity at high doses. The chemical structure of isocupressic acid consists of two terpenes, alpha-pinene and beta-myrcene. Alpha-pinene is a monoterpene that can inhibit certain enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase and monoamine oxidase, while beta-myrcene is a sesquiterpene found in many plants that can inhibit cyclooxygenase activity. These compounds have been shown to have cytotoxic effects on cells in culture
