Isorhynchophylline is a natural product that has been shown to have synergic effects with other drugs in inducing apoptosis. It inhibits the activity of P-glycoprotein, which is an ATP binding cassette transporter protein that pumps out drugs from the cell and prevents their re-entry. Isorhynchophylline also has significant cytotoxicity and induces signal pathways that lead to neuronal death. This compound binds to response elements on DNA, inhibiting transcription of pro-inflammatory genes. Isorhynchophylline can be created as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) product by adding anhydrous sodium hydroxide to rhizoma gastrodiae, a Chinese herb. The resulting reaction solution can be analyzed by plasma mass spectrometry or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
