Juvenile hormone I is a cyclohexane ring-containing insect hormone that has been found to have a wide variety of biological effects. It can bind to the nuclear DNA of cells and inhibit the synthesis of cycloheximide, an antibiotic. The affinity constants for this binding are high, and the hydroxyl group on the cyclohexane ring is important for this activity. Juvenile hormone I has been used in pharmaceutical preparations as a chemical ionization reagent in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and it has also been shown to have protein synthesis-inhibiting effects in vitro. Juvenile hormone I has also been shown to have cell culture-inhibiting effects when combined with piperonyl butoxide.
