(S)-(+)-Ketopinic acid is an isomer of the ketonic acid which has been synthesized by anthropogenic means. It can be produced by the reaction of malonic acid with thiourea in the presence of a chiral organocatalyst such as 1,3-diphenylpropane. The ketopinic acid obtained is a bifunctional compound that can catalyze the asymmetric synthesis of enantiomerically pure products. This reaction proceeds through a nucleophilic addition followed by an elimination reaction. Reaction conditions are influenced by factors such as concentration, temperature, and solvent polarity.
