Lovastatin is a chemical species belonging to the chemical class of statins. It inhibits cholesterol synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is involved in converting mevalonate to isoprene and farnesyl pyrophosphate. Lovastatin has been shown to be effective against a number of bacterial strains, including E. coli, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, and Helicobacter pylori. This drug has been shown to be active against HIV-1 and human papillomavirus (HPV), with potent inhibitory activity at low doses. Lovastatin also inhibits the production of neutrophil chemotactic protein 1 (PD-L1) in cells infected with human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). The major metabolite of lovastatin is pravastatin, which exhibits similar properties but weaker potency.END>
