DL-Leucine methyl ester hydrochloride is a drug that is used as a component of intravenous immunoglobulin in the treatment of leishmaniasis. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis by blocking the activity of serine proteases, which are enzymes that cleave peptide bonds in proteins, and to block the production of amyloid protein by binding with hydroxyl groups. DL-Leucine methyl ester hydrochloride also binds with high specificity and affinity to monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against leishmania. The drug has been shown to have a pharmacokinetic profile suitable for use as an intravenous drug.
