Leishman stain is a diagnostic test used to detect the presence of Leishmania protozoa. This test is based on the ability of these organisms to bind to iron in a way that it will react with an acidic dye. In this case, the use of trypsin in the preparation of the sample allows better visualization. The Leishman stain can be used in different clinical pathology tests and as a contraceptive. It also has been shown to have activity against HIV infection and autoimmune diseases by blocking activation of T-cells.
