DL-Methyl lactate is a chemical that belongs to the group of organic compounds and is classified as a lactate. It is a colorless liquid with an unpleasant, sour odor. DL-Methyl lactate has been shown to be reactive with bacterial strains. The reaction mechanisms are not well understood, but it may involve intramolecular hydrogen transfer to form an ester or intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The oxidation catalyst used in this reaction is usually manganese dioxide or platinum on carbon. This reaction can also be carried out using water as the solvent.
