2-Methyl-1,3-dioxolane is a sodium salt that is used in the treatment of wastewater. It is an ionic liquid that has been shown to be chemically stable and does not decompose under conditions of high temperature or pressure. 2-Methyl-1,3-dioxolane has been shown to have a low toxicity for mammals and can be used as a solvent for chemical reactions. 2-Methyl-1,3-dioxolane binds to acetylcholine receptors and stimulates cholinergic neurotransmission by acting as an acetylcholine agonist. This reaction is reversible and can be catalyzed by oxidation catalysts such as hydrochloric acid.
2 Methyl 1, 3 dioxolane has been shown to act as a specific agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the hippocampal formation of rats during cationic polymerization.
