5-Methylpyrimidine is an active compound with antitumor, antiviral, and antifungal properties. It has been shown to have a synergistic inhibitory effect when used in combination with epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors. 5-Methylpyrimidine binds to the epidermal growth factor receptor kinase domain and inhibits cell proliferation by inhibiting the production of proteins that are required for cell division. Structural isomers of 5-methylpyrimidine have been found in non-small cell lung cancer cells. Inhibition of this molecule may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of epidermal growth factor receptors on cells or its inhibition of phosphorylation of epidermal growth factor receptors.
