Methyl 2-fluoro-5-hydroxybenzoate is a potent allosteric modulator of metabotropic glutamate receptors, which are involved in neuronal communication, plasticity, and memory. Methyl 2-fluoro-5-hydroxybenzoate has been shown to be a potent agonist at the mGlu2 metabotropic glutamate receptor. It also has been shown to increase the activity of prefrontal glutamatergic neurons and to have antidepressant effects mediated by this receptor. These effects may be due to methyl 2-fluoro-5-hydroxybenzoate's ability to potentiate the glutamate receptor, resulting in increased levels of glutamate in the synapse.
