2-Methyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid is an intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of pharmaceuticals. It is used as a reagent for the preparation of antibodies and other polyclonal antigens. 2-Methyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid has been shown to be active against cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. This compound is metabolized by chlorinating or sulfating enzymes to form the corresponding thiolactam which inhibits protein synthesis, thereby inhibiting cell growth. The activity of 2-methyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid has also been shown to inhibit postoperative pain through inhibition of prostaglandin biosynthesis.
