4-Methyl-2-[4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-1,3-thiazole-5-carbox (MTT) is a metabolite of 4-methylthioamphetamine that is used as an analytical reagent. MTT can be quantified using liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization with tandem mass spectrometry and long-term detection time. This compound has been detected in horse urine, where it is produced in the liver by oxidation of sulfoxides. When MTT is metabolized, it forms a thiocyanate group and reacts with dithiothreitol to form a blue adduct that can be measured by absorbance at 570 nm. In human plasma samples, MTT was found to have an uptake of 0.01% after four hours and plasma levels were detectable for up to 24 hours following ingestion. MTT may be useful as a biomarker for detecting long-term use
