Methyl 2-chloroacetoacetate is a copper complex that is used to enhance the growth of primary cells. It has been shown to increase collagen production and fatty acid synthesis in tissue culture experiments. Methyl 2-chloroacetoacetate reacts with hydroxyl groups on the peptide chains of proteins, forming hydrogen bonds. This reaction mechanism has been found to be reversible and can also form neutral ph complexes with enzymes such as prostaglandin synthetase. The compound is soluble in water and hydrochloric acid but not in sodium citrate or sodium carbonate.
