4-Methoxycinnamonitrile is a fumigant that is used to control insects, nematodes, and fungi. It has been shown to be an effective insecticide against chrysomelidae and other pests. 4-Methoxycinnamonitrile binds with sodium nitrate to form a salt, which can be applied as a spray or dusted on the ground. This salt has been shown to inhibit the Cox-2 enzyme, which is an important contributor to inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. The active ingredient in 4-methoxycinnamonitrile, eugenol, also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes.
