3-[(Methylamino)methyl]phenol (3-MeAP) is a cholinergic agent that has neuroprotective and anti-amnesic effects. 3-MeAP is a lead compound for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and stroke. It binds to acetylcholinesterase (AChE), preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, which promotes neurite outgrowth. 3-MeAP also prevents scopolamine-induced amnesia in mice by inhibiting the activity of AChE. 3-MeAP may have medicinal applications due to its ability to bind to targets that are not currently treatable with existing drugs.
