1-Methylpiperidin-2-yl)methylamine is a chemical with the formula CH3CH2NHCH2CH3. It is an alkaloid that is found in plants of the genus Anadenanthera. The molecule consists of two amine groups connected by a methylene bridge. 1-Methylpiperidin-2-yl)methylamine is used as a precursor to other drugs, including the opioid analgesic etorphine and the antihypertensive agent metoprolol. Deamination reactions convert this molecule into amphetamine and methamphetamine, which are addictive and illegal substances. Nitrous acid oxidation of 1-methylpiperidin-2-yl)methylamine yields nitrites, which are also toxic and carcinogenic compounds.
