1-[4-(Methylthio)phenyl]methanamine is an organic compound that is used as a nootropic drug. It has been shown to be effective in improving memory and cognition in animal studies. It is synthesized by reacting methyl thiocyanate with an amino acid derivative, such as aminobenzoic acid, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting acetonitrile (1-cyano-2-methylpropene) with alkali. The product can then be reacted with various carboxylic acids or esters to produce the desired 1-[4-(methylthio)phenyl]methanamine.
