4-Methyl-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that binds to the COX enzyme and blocks the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin. This results in suppression of inflammation, fever, and pain. 4-Methyl-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylic acid has been shown to be effective against carrageenan induced erythema and edema in mice. Pharmacological studies have shown that this compound exhibits high affinity for COX enzymes, as well as ionizing radiation and carrageenan induced inflammation. The pharmacophore model for this molecule is an oxadiazole with a carboxylic acid group on the side chain.
