6-Methylpiperidin-2-one is a two-ringed heterocycle that is a building block for the synthesis of many other heterocyclic compounds. It is synthesized from an iminium derivative and an alkali metal salt of piperidine in the presence of borohydride. 6-Methylpiperidin-2-one can be reduced to 1,4-dihydropyridine or 1,4-dihydropyrimidine with sodium borohydride. This process can be carried out stereoselectively to give the desired stereoisomer. 6-Methylpiperidin-2-one has been used as a precursor in the synthesis of various amines. The asymmetric synthesis of 6-methylpiperidinones has been accomplished by using photosensitized reactions with phenylsilane and methylene blue.
