Methyl 3-chloro-5-nitrobenzoate (MCNB) is a photoactive molecule that can be used to study electron transfer reactions. It has been shown in computational studies to be an acceptor of electrons and undergo intramolecular electron transfer reactions. MCNB also has a conformational change when it reacts with the solvent, which leads to an increase in fluorescence intensity. MCNB is exothermic, as evidenced by its high heat of formation.
