Methyl 4-methylamino-butanoate hydrochloride is an organic chloride that can be used to produce ester hydrochlorides. The reaction of methanol and methyl 4-methylamino-butanoate hydrochloride leads to the formation of a crystallizing ester product. This reaction can be carried out in large quantities and is easily recycled.
Methyl 4-methylamino-butanoate hydrochloride reacts with thionyl chloride or n-methylpyrrolidone to form the desired ester, which can then be converted into azelastine hydrochloride, a drug used for the treatment of allergic rhinitis.
