1-Methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole is a molecule that belongs to the class of nitroimidazoles. It has been shown to radiosensitize tumor cells in vitro and in vivo by inhibiting DNA synthesis. The molecule reacts with oxygen to produce nitric oxide, which acts as a cytotoxic agent. 1-Methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole is synthesized by the reaction of 2 nitroimidazoles with anions such as halogens, cyanides, sulfates, or phosphates. This drug is bidentate and can bind with two different anions at the same time. The reactivity of 1 methyl 5 nitro imidazole is due to the electron density on nitrogen atom which makes it susceptible to protonation. Reduction of this protonated form leads to the formation of 1 methyl 5 (2H) imidazolium cation
