2-Methylisoquinolin-1(2H)-one is a heterocyclic compound that has been used in the synthesis of a number of other heterocycles. It is also useful as an intermediate in the preparation of alcohols and chlorides. 2-Methylisoquinolin-1(2H)-one can be prepared by Friedel-Crafts reaction, which involves the reaction of an aromatic hydrocarbon with dichlorocarbene and a metal chloride. The synthesis usually requires refluxing, heating and stirring for several hours. A second method involves reacting an alcohol with benzoic anhydride and a metal chloride, followed by hydrolysis to form 2-methylisoquinolin-1(2H)-one. This compound can also be synthesized from creosote using a method involving methanogenic bacteria.
