4-Methoxyphenyl-3-oxobutyramide (MOB) is a lanthanum compound with a crystalline structure and a melting point of 116°C. It has been found to be active against gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Bacillus subtilis. The solute MOB was acetoxylated by the addition of acetic anhydride in the presence of pyridine to form 2-[4-(acetoxy)phenyl]-3-oxobutyramide (AO). This derivative was found to be more active than MOB against gram-positive bacteria. The kinetic method was used to study the reaction between AO and halides such as chloride or bromide.
