2-Methoxy-N-methylaniline is a methoxy amide that is irradiated with ultraviolet light in the presence of a catalyst. This reaction causes bond cleavage and low yield. The mechanism for this reaction is not well understood, but it may be due to photolytic reactions. 2-Methoxy-N-methylaniline is identifiable by NMR spectroscopy and can be used to evaluate the mechanisms of this reaction. It has been shown to react with tantalum, which leads to the formation of an aminomethyl group on the tantalum surface.
